Come join us for Bike-Friendly Fridays!

About a year and a half ago, I got wind of a group in the Phoenix area that had such a good time when they met up at a local coffeeshop for breakfast on Bike to Work Day, that they decided to keep the tradition going every Friday. I tend to have a lot of bicycling things I want to talk about, but find it challenging to have good conversations in the middle of bike rides (“Why yes, we SHOULD change that intersection, AUGH, LOOK OUT FOR THAT SKUNK!”). So I thought it would be a good idea to start a homegrown version where it would be possible to gather, eat, and talk about bikes, without having to worry about dodging potholes at the same time. And thus, Bicycle-Friendly Fridays were born!

If this sounds good and interesting to you, I encourage you to join us. We meet up at the Blue Baker on Dominik Drive, and most of us tend to arrive at around 7:15, depending on our individual morning schedules. We’ll have a bite to eat, chat for a bit, and then head our respective ways for work. It’s a nice way to start the morning.

Time for the Wednesday ride!

It has been a warm, summery week this week. There’s a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms today, but it looks like there’s a greater probability for wild weather slightly later in the week. So come on out and join us for the intermediate-paced Wednesday ride. We’ll plan on the usual loop up and around Lake Bryan, for a total of ~34 miles altogether.

Details will be the same as last week. Do make note that we plan to stop at several points along the route to regroup, including a stop at the Smetana gas station to refuel.

Group Riding Skills

One of the fun and rewarding parts of bicycling, for many people, is a chance to ride in groups. Group rides, ranging from the talkative Monday Social Ride, to the intense Take No Prisoners ride, present a unique set of challenges that are not always immediately apparent to new riders.

What are the best ways to learn good group-riding skills? One source I like are YouTube videos, such as the following one on how to avoid common causes of crashes, and how to minimize accidents and injuries if you do crash.

What resources have you used to learn more about group riding?

Best of Bicycle Friendly Friday

Event Details: Meet at the Blue Baker on Dominik between 7 and 7:15 am on Friday mornings. We are usually out of there by 9 am, but occasionally lethargy overtakes someone and they stay longer. Many folks leave to be at work at 8 or 8:30 am. No judgment issued if you don’t take your bike up to the event, but extra kudos if you do. The topic for discussion is often bicycling issues and advocacy in the Bryan/College Station area.

What have we got here? A bunch of photos. You can decide what’s the best of. This is everything I’ve got. Once again, if anyone wants to help me with names email jmlinhart ‘at’ gmail ‘dot’ com.

I think this first one is, indeed, one of our best.

Time for another Wednesday Ride

I (Rebecca) cannot attend this week, but I have it on good faith that James will be present to lead folks on yet another edition of the Wednesday Ride.

Please come out and join us – while our goal is an “intermediate” pace, “intermediate” can vary, depending on the fitness levels and speed of whomever shows up. The most important thing is to be willing to work with others and be patient to make the ride challenging, but fun.

Details for the ride:

Meet at 5:30 by the Flagpole, roll out at ~5:45, and if you’re running late let James know (before 5:20, e-mail james-dot-allan-dot-robertson at alumni.nd.edu).

We’ll average around 16 mph for 32 miles total (that will take 2 hours and change). We regroup at the end of each section to make sure no one gets lost or left behind, and there’s a stop at a gas station partway in to refuel (ha!). If you’re feeling frisky and reach regroup points fast, you can always add bonus miles by U-turning and doing additional laps. Why not?

Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/4665389

Bring water (2 bottles recommended), strap on your helment, fire up your bike lights, check to make sure you’ve got a snack and your toolbag, and join us!

Monday Night Social Ride and Picnic Fun

Thanks to Karen and Klayton for organizing, and for everyone who came out last night. We had a good time at my final Monday Social Ride and the picnic afterwards.

Social Ride Redux

Just a reminder that we have a Social Ride and a Picnic tonight! Come out and join us.

Clearly, I could use some help identifying people in the photos below. If you have help or a correction for me, please email jmlinhart ‘at’ gmail ‘dot’ com!

A July 2013 social ride.

Yet another Monday Social Ride, bookended with bicycles. (July 2013, Carolyn, James, Dean?, Marv, David, Rebecca, Rob.)

My last social ride is tonight. This is my 13th year doing the social ride. I don’t have much besides memories from those early days; the first years were before I owned a digital camera, and then for years, before there were so many easy ways to post photos for everyone.

The past two or so years we’ve been taking a lot of photos on the social ride and posting them on Facebook trying to draw people to the organization. One of our most discussed photos is this infamous one:

People spelling out "Monbay" social ride.

We were trying to spell out Monday for Monday Social Ride. We got Monbay instead …(May 2013: Phillip, Marv, Carolyn, Nicole, Rebecca, David.)

Nicole might never forgive me for not catching the backward d before we took that …

We’ve taken a lot of photos.

People spelling out "bikes".

We got tired of trying to come up with a word of the appropriate length for the number of riders and moved on to other antics.

A large group lined up for the social ride.

Lined up for a *large* social ride! I think this photo was included in the July 2013 Brazos Valley Insight Magazine, but I never got my own copy. (June 2013, R to L: Scott, Rebecca, Carolyn, Marv, Jean Marie, Unknown, Unknown, Jennifer, John, Joe, Gary, Nicole.)

Social Ride crew with two boys in a tree.

We got two younger Lightfoots to climb a tree. (July 2013: Joe, Young Lightfoot 1, John, Young Lightfoot 2, Jean Marie, Rob aka Dad.)

Sometimes we ran out of energy to come up with a good photo idea, and we took some straightforward shots.

Cyclists lined up.

Sometimes we were even pretty normal. (August 2013: Joe, Marv, Rob, Deana, Van, Philip.)

The best photos were the goofiest ones.

Let’s all lean over … just like that… and defy gravity. (June 2014: Unknown, Deana, Jean Marie, Carolyn, Unknown, Jerry, Joe, Van)

Cyclists out on the road.

A photo out on the open road — okay, this one is not so goofy, but it is taken out where we turn onto Timberline. (June 2014: Rebecca, John, Jerry, Deana, Glenn, Unknown, Unknown, Unknown.)

Cyclists imitating the see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil, have no fun monkeys.

Back to super-duper goofy again. See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil … have no fun. (July 2013: Philip, Rob, David, Rebecca, Carolyn.)

Cyclists surrounding Jean Marie who is spread out on the ground.

Oh my gosh, what happened to Jean Marie? (August 2013: Rebecca’s basket, Van, Unknown, Rob, Jean Marie.)

This is what we’ve been doing recently.

Angular arms configuration.

Another angular shot, with everyone making their arms angle into the middle. (July 2014: Joe, Unknown, Unknown, Unknown, Deana, Unknown, John, Jerry.)

A bicyclist with a bunny cap, and we all give each other rabbit ears.

Rabbit ears for everyone. (July 2014: Scott, Jean Marie, Jerry, Ben?.)

… and with that I leave you. You might get one more photo from tonight, my last Monday Social Ride. I think I also have a set of miscellaneous and hilariously goofy photos from Bicycle Friendly Friday and a few other events that should probably go up for posterity. Thanks for reading, thanks for riding with me, thanks for all the bicycling memories.

Picnic and Social Ride Monday July 21, 2014

Many of you know I’m moving out of our community on July 28.

Monday July 21 (coming up soon!), after the social ride, my friend Karen has generously arranged a picnic to send me off to Washington. Everyone is invited, new riders, old friends, friends who don’t ride, if you want to be there, just come. Karen asks “It would help if I could get an RSVP (to vierow@verizon.net) on the number of people in your party. If you don’t RSVP, please show up anyways as I will bring more than what seems appropriate.” If you are planning on bringing a potluck item (which is NOT required, especially not for those doing the ride), please mention that too.

The picnic will be in Steeplechase Park (click for map), and will start at about 7:30 pm. There are picnic tables near the playscape and dog run area where we will gather. Social Riders should arrive around 7:30 and certainly by 7:45.

If you want to join for the bike ride:

Departure time: Mondays, 6 pm from Technology Loop in TAMUs Research Park
Route: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5881835
or http://ridewithgps.com/routes/4684741
Distance: ~20 usually, but the short route is ~15 if needed.
Meeting place: TAMUs Research Park, on Technology Loop, nearest shade
to the south bridge by the duck pond
Pace: Suitable for beginners, no-drop.
Required items: helmets, flat change kit, water
Strongly suggested: headlights, taillights, food, cell phone

Some notes: Beginners welcome, faster people will need to slow down to make the pace comfortable for everyone to ride and talk. No fancy bike is required.

For more photos from the social ride, visit .
